Flow and Head in Submersible Pump Selection

October 20264 min read

In well and water-supply applications, a wrong pump choice means either the water demand isn't met or the pump runs at unnecessarily high cost. The right choice rests on two key values: flow and head.

Flow (Q)

The amount of water to be delivered per unit time (usually m³/h). The requirement is calculated by use (irrigation, drinking water, plumbing).

Head (H)

The total height the pump must lift the water; it is the sum of the well's dynamic water level, the height from surface to tank and pipe friction losses. An incomplete calculation causes the water not to reach its destination.

Why does the right choice matter?

  • Undersized pump: water demand not met
  • Oversized pump: energy waste and early wear
  • Wrong column pipe/cable: efficiency loss and fault risk

VE GRUP carries out submersible pump selection, installation, crane lowering-lifting and panel-automation applications according to site conditions.
